Production of Country Notes and Quality Control

The production of country notes was based on two main premises: guarantee comparability across countries and ensure the highest level of quality. These premises were particularly important as the coding of countries was for the most part based on a qualitative assessment of the situation of women and men in a particular country. Several provisions have helped us achieve our objective:

  • country notes were based on a common set of guidelines and coding principles that were discussed among the country note authors;
  • country notes went through an external review process with a team of researchers from Erasmus University Rotterdam, under the leadership of Prof. Geske Dijkstra;
  • country notes were harmonised in style and language by professional editors who ensured that each document uses the same expressions to describe certain phenomena;
  • the Social Institutions and Gender Index was constructed by the Development Economics Research Group of Göttingen University, under the leadership of Prof. Stephan Klasen.
